In fairness to the writers, you can't really have a sequel trilogy if there is nothing to fight (ie: the "balance" of the Force/good times/warm and fuzzies/sunshiney days whatever you want to call it going out of sync).

So to some degree a sequel trilogy by default was always going to in some ways invalidate the original trilogy, because all evil should've stopped at that point and the galaxy should've lived happily ever after, which means this trilogy would be about ... Rey helping Luke to decorate his house?
