The game is the first one since Link to the Past where the Overworld feels more than just something you walk along with obstacles to get to town or the next dungeon.

I think it's because in previous games the dungeons would house an item and they would be designed around that particular item and what ever else you were meant to have at the time, in BOTW the dungeons are just designed around a simple concept overall.
