The 2D / 3D shift is one thing but what really distinguishes this game is the rock/paper/scissors-like gameplay between counters, grabs and specials. Specials break grabs, grabs break counters and counters break specials. I like to think that this comes from the nature of being a Pokemon game, and that the evelopers thought they should build the game around this trinity in order to reflect the various element circles in Pokemon games breaking each other.
