Well if people don't really care, then PS is justified in not worrying about cross play for the most part. To say, only games that end up having a poor user base need cross play, but others don't and would be a waste, is another reason why PS wouldn't make it a priority. If a game sells that bad or has few online players, there's more than likely a valid reason for it. You also can't always please everyone, even the few who may be addicted to a low user base game. There is always the option to try another similar game with a larger user base, or just try another game altogether. For PS and the available PS4 library, this shouldn't really be much of a problem from their point of view.
Maybe the whole thing was just a fluke, but it kind of seemed like there was something more at play, even if somebody was just simply testing the waters, "inadvertently".

PS4 - $- We must build a console that’s affordable, charges for services, and pumps out exclusives.
PRO -%-We must build a console that's VR ready, checkerboard upscales, and sells but a fraction of the money printer.
PS5 - ^ -We must build a console that’s a generational cross product, with RT lighting, and price hiking.
PRO -&- We must build a console that Super Res upscales and continues the cost increases.
