I never though Nintendo was doomed because handheld was always going strong.

BUT, their home devices are kinda only 3 of their homes consoles were a big success in my opinion. NES, SNES, and Wii. N64 was a huge decline, Gamecube was an even bigger decline, and in a post Wii world they dropped the ball with Wii U which was their great failure in my opinion (albeit having some very notable software).

We're technically at a point where Nintendo home consoles no longer exist. I know people will Switch is a home console console, but its built as a portable device first because that's where Nintendo does best. Nintendo no longer competes head on with Sony and MS because they can't.

Open world (Zelda), online shooter (Splatoon) and motion control fighter (ARMS) at $60 aren't exactly the traditional Nintendo handheld lineup, are they?

The bar has been going up and up on what expect from handheld games. Especially post PSP, 3DS, Vita, and smart devices. Over a decade ago we had console-esque GTA on a portable device.

While the Switch fills the void of a traditional home consoles, it was built for portability. Frankly, I'm happy all the major companies are basically focused on one device now and the traditional home console market is covered by MS, Sony, and technially PC.
