Splatoon 1 is still amazing and I've gone back to it after playing Splatoon 2 since it launched. They removed defensive and strength abilites (CODish twitch fest) and made it more noob-friendly... at least in my opinion. 

They kinda had to do that. The Switch being infinitely more popular than the WiiU means the game would get an influx of new players. If they couldn't compete against veterans, it would be problematic for the series in the long run.
