2020 or more probably 2021 can be one of the first years when cheap portable CPUs and GPUs will be able to deliver HD VR, but i'm not too sure it would fit well in Nintendo plans and philosophy, even less as a mid-life Switch model, as even a simple and cheap mid-life addition like WiiMote Plus higher precision motion control, despite being what many actually expected from Wii since launch, didn't receive enough first party support, let alone third party one.
VR to become mainstream will have to be standard equipment since console launch, so neitherr PS4, nor XBOne, nor Switch will achieve it, we'll have to wait until at least next gen, if not even the successive one. Or maybe it will remain niche, although a lot bigger than now, forever, if the majority of gamers will decide it likes to use it only on a minority of games, or in a minor part of times they play.
