I know you can transition from 2D to 3D, but there are games that have had similar elements in Japan for Nintendo systems. I would say Donkey Kong Country 1-3 (SNES), Super Mario RPG (SNES), and Yoshi's Island (SNES/DS) are similar. I'd say for a comparison, look at how well the new (and excellent) Yoshi's Island DS game sells.
