Mighty Gunvolt Burst Review
Originality: Nothing about this is terribly innovative or unique. A side scroller game with Metroid like upgrades, yet without the Metroid like free exploration (once you’re in a room, you’re stuck and there isn’t really a reason to backtrack), and just rapid fire blasting to beat any and every boss. Certain bosses I figured out you could just beat sitting in the corner without them even being able to touch you really. And once you get the .25% damage upgrade, you’re basically invincible. I died a ton early on, but less and less as I got better equipment and then the final boss I didn’t die once on him or the previous bosses you have to fight in that final stage (it left me unsatisfied). Very unoriginal game.
5/20
Graphics: I grade this in proportion to their era and, just like Shovel Knight, I enjoyed the old school graphics they did intentionally. Though with this game, to be honest with all the lasers and what not, I would have liked something a bit sharper and clearer, while still retaining the old school look. It was just a bit messy looking at times.
7/10
Art Style: I didn’t enjoy the art style in this as much as ShovelKnight as it didn’t change much throughout the game (no storms or lightning, etc), but certain levels looked interesting.
9/15
Story: Boring, stupid dialogue. There is a difference in being cleverly nerdy and over-the-top stupid. This game was the later, and I still don’t even know what really happened in this game, nor do I understand why the heck Beck is in it. But you know what? After I beat it in no time at all I don’t even care enough about the story to bother trying to figure it out.
7/30
Game Interface: Annoying or not? No issues here.
5/5
Controls easy and fluid or difficult and rigid? I was hoping you could screen touch the food in the middle of the battle in order to heal up, but that isn’t too much of an issue.
4/5
Is it fun? It’s short and to the point. Not the worst thing I’ve ever played (*cough Project X Zone) but also not even close to the enjoyment I had with ShovelKnight or Shantae (so far).
10/15

* Means it was more fun than the score indicates. Scores judge the overall quality of the game (how fun it is only counts for 15% in my reviews)
NR means Not Recommended based on inappropriateness.
