Which is why I prefer it when Nintendo go their own way too; no point having three identical systems on the market, that's never worked out.

Yep, Wii U failed because it felt just like another basic console with a cumbersome gamepad that was rarely utilized.

If Wii U just stuck with the Wiimotes, it would have been cheaper, still unique, and would have done well. Wiimotes kinda saved Nintendo and they threw it away.

The joy cons are pretty much exactly what I expected the next generation Wiimotes would be - smaller, lighter, more accurate, and more buttons.Perhaps a little bit more than that, since I never considered the HD rumble. It was disappointing that Wii U opted to ignore them, and went with a much more single player experience.  But we finally got the joycons, and the only really great part of the Wii U (off TV play). Better late than never I suppose.

I also found the Wii U lacked the charm of the Wii. It had the Miiverse, but it was SO SLOWWWWW that it made it painful to use; great concept, but ruined by a very bad implementation, and it was only ever really well used in a handful of games, most notably NSMBU. The Wii had a bunch of different channels that gave it a lot of charm: this guy reviews them, like a kid in a playground, saying goodbye before they shut down in the summer of 2013.
