That's also the reason why I consider Nintendo going third party to be the worst that could happen. Mario, Zelda, Fire Emblem, Pokemon and once in a while some different game from them? No thanks

WE know that. But executives are not gamers, they go by brand recognition. When the Dreamcast died, Sonic was still very big, much bigger than all the rest they had at hand. Nowadays they're practically forced to stick with Sonic because they let their old IPs fall into obscurity so much that many have been forgotten by now.
