Developing a game with robust co-op requires specific design choices in order to make it work for everyone.

Yeah same here, I'm glad the co-op mode doesn't intrude detrimentally on the solo experience.

Single player > Multiplayer in my book.

This seems a good compromise; a second player can get in on the action if they like, while solitary players like myself won't get a compromised experience.
