.It's not. Kunihiko Tanaka's art direction is part of the spirit of the Xeno franchise, from Xenogears, to Xenosaga, to Xenoblade Chronicles X. It's as bad of decision in regards to the art direction, as it was for the audio direction when they took Mitsuda out of the equation for XCX.
That said, I can live without Kunihiko Tanaka's character art in the same way I can live without Mitsuda's music, because other elements look interesting to me. Although, I think it would be ideal to have Soraya Saga, Kunihiko Tanaka, and Mitsuda all working on the next Xeno game.
