Let me ask you this due to my ignorance.  If I bought a game such as the original Zelda for the Wii, do I need to re-buy it for the Wii-U for example?

No need for the first part- it's a good question. 

 

Anyways, you can transfer it from your Wii to your Wii U. Just make sure you have both available. 

 

Also, if you want to have pro controller/gamepad support, I believe you can pay $1-2 to upgrade to the Wii U version of the virtual console title. That way, you won't need to use a wiimote/classic controller
