Well, here's some of the first game; not the best quality captures, but better looking than the 3DS MH games in my book.

First 2 images: Only 1 shadow (no environment or self shadows), low polygon counts, low res textures, no light sources.
3rd iamge: CGI cut scene. Doesn't count.

Those in game rendered images do not look better than:

Shenmue has better textures, better image quality, and overall just looks cleaner and more polished.
