Yeah, that was the problem 100% of the time with the youtubers, complaining about movement but holding the controllers wrong, even though the game showed you how to hold them. The movement won't work correctly unless you play with thumbs on the triggers.
A good strategy I found was to head into practice between all matches, and practice jumping + dashing and then striking at the targets. You can really hone your aiming skills that way. Some players are clueless as to how to move out of the way/hit attacks away, they are easy to jump above and throw. So practice throws a lot too.
