Last gen was an outlier. Today there are a billion+ smartphones in everyone's pocket that have access to thousands of free video games in a very easy way and some of those games have marketing budgets larger than any console game.
That was always going to impact the industry in profound ways and there was nothing Sony/Nintendo/MS could do to stop it.
There's still plenty of money to made from the dedicated game market.
PS4 + XBox One/Scorpio + Switch + Wii U + 3DS should be able to outsell the PS2 + GameCube + XBox + GBA + Dreamcast cycle.
