Yes I'm not much of a reader but the two books that I actually read and that where made into movies Jussasic Park and The Autobiography of Malcom X where both inferior to the books.  Jurrasic Park would have been R rated if it followed the book more closely and Malcom X would have been over 4 hours long if it followed the book more closely.  Even though I never read the book most people consider The Godfather movie superior to the book.

With King I enjoyed The Shining, but I also loved Kubrick's take on it.  I think some things translate and other aspects have to be adjusted for different mediums.

Well even if a story isn't based on a book they add stuff to make it more watchable like the did with The Butler or Platoon which is loosely based on Oliver Stones experience in Vietnam but he made up some stuff to make it more cinematic.
