Every single Mario game ever is a Show. They are all actors in a play/show. Miyamoto confirmed this by saying that is why Bowser appears in games like Mario Kart. It's why there is curtains in SMB3 and a audience in Paper Mario.

Miyamoto said he thinks of them like cartoon characters such as Popeye the Sailor and perpetual rival Bluto, who might be buccaneer rivals in one episode and reluctant roommates in another.
