Nintendo is really terrible at in-generation adjustments too, ever notice that? It's like once a generation starts they basically are helpless to change/adjust course, they still probably could've released a CD-add-on as late as 1998 and seen considerable benefit from doing so, but they just had to let the entire generation burn in flames before accepting optical media the next time around. 

64DD should've been shit-canned ages earlier in favor of a 64CD. Once that thing was delayed for like the 5th time someone really needed to step up in their board meetings and talk some sense into Yamauchi.
