Well a new monster hunter game recently was released and the 3DS still has the potential for one more good year, like with most Nintendo handhelds, they still do pretty well for a while after the next system is out. The 3DS will be offically dead in the water in Japan when it get's a lack of new releases and the Switch gets Pokemon, Animal Crossing and Monster Hunter.
