For myself, 2006 and 2007 were the most memorable, since I was then old and educated enough to understand the technical aspects of gaming, instead of just fun new games with more stuff to do in them. The 360 and PS3 really sparked my interest in gaming and its potential future.
Those years and E3 shows were definitely some of the more memorable times in gaming history, but for some gamers it goes much further back than that. I would also say 2013 falls into that memorable category, and possibly 2017, we'll see.
In any industry new content always gets harder, whether from a creative or business standpoint. At least the remasters, remakes, prequels, sequels, and offshoots, have been done well over the last few years, for the most part, excluding a few here and there.
PS1 - ! - We must build a console that can alert our enemies.
PS2 - @- We must build a console that offers online living room gaming.
PS3 - #- We must build a console that’s powerful, social, costs and does everything.
PS4 - $- We must build a console that’s affordable, charges for services, and pumps out exclusives.
PRO -%-We must build a console that's VR ready, checkerboard upscales, and sells but a fraction of the money printer.
PS5 - ^ -We must build a console that’s a generational cross product, with RT lighting, and price hiking.
PRO -&- We must build a console that Super Res upscales and continues the cost increases.
