Here is my theory. They realized that the current model has a lot of technical problems, and that they need to make a more refined, cheaper to produce new model for 2018.

In the meantime they are ramping up the production of the current model to reduce the cost of manufacturing (more volume equal reduced cost), and to have plenty of it,  until the new model is ready to enter production. Basically the production of the current model will stop at 16 millions.

We 'll see if my thoery pan out.

I wish I could subsribe to your theory but I don't.  If they believe the current model is defective, why in the world would they double its production?

They produce more so they can stop production sooner. Those 16 millions will have to last until the end of 2018.
