Yes, I've heard that as well. Epona seems to be accesible somewhere in the game without the amiibo (but this is not confirmed yet). And yes, it actually is Epona, it's the strongest horse in the game and called Epona when you register it at a stable. It's confirmed at 02:30 in this video: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=3sts_ZOqwGE
Wolf Link though seems to be tied to the Wolf Link amiibo from TP.
As I'm mainly interested in Wolf Link, I just ordered the Wii U special edition of TP which comes with the Wolf amiibo. I wanted to buy the game anyway.
