Perhaps, you have yet to here of this little island called: Japan. Where portable gaming is King and Nintendo dominates the dedicated market.
It may not have the 3DS games... because they're on the 3DS. If 3DS support is what you are referring to, give it time, it'll come. 2017 will be the last year they support the 3DS. With the Switch, in 2017, they want to get the Wii U console owners to jump first, which is where the die-hard, dedicated Nintendo fanbase is. Then, they'll make the switch to getting their handheld audience over in 2018. Fire Emblem will be out by that point, which, if the Fire Emblem fanbase hasn't made the Switch by that point with Fire Emblem Warriors, they will.
And did you already forget about this one tiny little franchise called Pokemon
Being portable will absolutely help it, ESPECIALLY in Japan where console gaming is a slowly dying breed. That's the main reason people want the thing.
You couldn't carry the Wii U GamePad beyond your bathroom before losing connection. And if you wanted to play it anywhere, you needed to console to go with it, which killed whatever portable factor it had. With the Switch, that problem is gone.
And the fact that this system has dropped the Wii and DS names entirely and is something completely different already eliminates the biggest flaw the Wii U had.
Wii U = People thought it was an add on, tablet accessory to the Wii.
Switch = People know that they can make the Switch between console and handheld and that this is the new Nintendo system.

Lets hope Japan falls for it. Im thinking you're anticipating 3DS sales. Then again...i'm hearing rumors that Nintendo working on a 3DS succesor. For the sake of the switch, I hope this is not true. Correct me if I am wrong, but arent all mainline Pokemon games on the primary portable that Nintendo offers? Anything on the console for Pokemon is secondary compared.

Seeing as how the Switch is getting a new Fire Emblem in Japan, as I mentioned, plus Dragon Quest X and XI, to go along with DQ Heroes I & II at launch. Also, the team behind Bravely Default and Bravely Second on the 3DS is working on a new RPG for the Switch, THAT should be a key hint that the Switch IS the 3DS successor to go along with the Wii U successor.
And you are correct, all mainline Pokemon games go to the handheld. Spinoffs go to the console. But with recent rumors of the 3rd Sun/Moon game being on Switch (doubt it's true, since it would be on the 3DS or at least cross-gen if it was), I think we will see mainline Pokemon on the Switch. But it'll be another 2-3 years before we see Gen VIII, so no use speculating now.
Speaking of cross-gen, Fire Emblem Warriors, is cross-gen between the New 3DS and Switch, if the Switch wasn't a successor to the 3DS, I don't think they would have made that game available on both systems, ESPECIALLY considering that the definitive version will be the Switch version (going off of Hyrule Warriors experience because the 3DS verison of that game runs like basura.) They did that as a way of saying "Hey, New 3DS owners, we'll give you this game on your system, BUT there's this other system where it'll run much better and look much better PLUS it's ALSO portable and you can take it with you JUST like the 3DS." I don't think we're seeing another dedicated handheld from Nintendo to succeed the 3DS to go along with Switch, because:
a) Having 2 new portable systems side by side would be redundant and a waste of resources.
b) The DS line has reached its Twilight. It's time to move on to something else. I mean where else is there to go? HDS? The Switch has that area covered.
c) It would be a lot more beneficial for them and for us, if they have just one system to develop for. This way those Wii U droughts never happen again.
2017 will be the last year they support the 3DS, and then from 2018 onwards, it's all eyes and hands on deck on the Switch. Plus, Pokemon isn't the only huge Nintendo franchise in Japan. There's also Animal Crossing, in fact, New Leaf actually just eclipsed X/Y as the best selling 3DS game AND the best selling game of the 8th generation in Japan. So, that's the 2 biggest franchises in Japan both owned by Nintendo, that I'm sure will be on the Switch. Then there's also Monster Hunter, and seeing as how Capcom keeps Monster Hunter as a portable/handheld franchise, I'm pretty sure they've got the next mainline entry in development for the Switch as I type this.

The Switch will be quite popular in Japan, I'm sure of it.
