Was an acceptable look for a home console and decided that on top of that they would give Sony 18 months to build a headsart with the Playstation 2.
That was basically the acceleration of the end of Nintendo as a relevant long term home console force (N64 would be the beginning of the end).
Wii U was just the death knell.

It looks decent in silver, I might rebuy one just to have that color again, but from a marketing POV this design was a disaster.
Even for the 1980s, that would have looked like a toy console, much moreso than the NES or even SNES, which were fairly vanilla/neutral designs for the most part.
