If Sony drops out of mobile, PlayStation will eventually fail. Going forward the only way to be successful is to have a brand and OS that spans across multiple form factors. They have to have PlayStations that range from Phones, to handhelds, to Tablets, to Laptops, to Consoles, to PC, and TV. 

With OS's like Android, iOS, and Windows covering multiple form factors, and creating massive userbases, the days of being able to sustain a business around on niche device are coming to an end. PS4 is basically the only device that has any signifigance in the market with this single device approach, but even it is starting to feel the limits of being one device. Sales in the US are down even with new hardware, and VR last year. 

Sony needs to merge mobile into PlayStation and create mobile PlayStation devices ASAP. They need to expand the presence of their OS and ecosystem, to create greater value and higher customer engagement. By having mobile device that run PS4 games and the PS4 OS, they can stay connected to users 24/7. Having that constant connection is vital to the continued success of any platform right now, and even more so going forward.

I really hope Sony does not just become a component provider, because no one else in the industry innovates like them. The only two companies in the entire electronics space that I have ever seen focus on innovation are Sony and Nintendo. The rest are all about profits and riding that comfort zone. I would absolutly hate a future where iPhones, Amazon Fire Boxs, and PC's just rinse and repeat forever. Since the car industry is dead already, I really don't know where I would go if this happened.
