Nope, there's a N64 C-button style arrow buttons, they did this so in "detached 2-player" mode, both players have access to 1 analog stick + 4 face buttons. 

 

To get a d-pad you're either going to have to buy the Pro Controller for $70 or wait until Nintendo releases a Joy Con with the D-Pad instead, which is probably another $50. 

But wasn't your point about playing virtual console games?  Or would they just register as face buttons instead?
