I am sure that the Joy-cons have their own batteries. Also pretty sure that they get charged when docked, and absolutely sure that the bridge part you can slip the Joy-cons on charges them when the bridge part is connected to a power source via USB cable.

I think you need to buy the 30$ grip for that, the one that comes with the system doesn't seem to have USB slot.
