At first, I was disappointed.
Now it seems fine. I think it's due to the Wii U experience that the battery life scared me. But this is different than Wii U. The Wii U tablet, IS the controller. If I sit down and game for 6 hours straight AT HOME, the gamepad will not last that long. I noticed that many times (not even 6 hours, was shorter)
I did get the better battery pack and that helped immensely.
But the reason I'm not upset in regards to this system is because that is only the ON THE GO battery. When at home, where I will be putting in the "long" hours, I will be using a normal controller and battery life means nothing.
3 hours+ is plenty for whatever road trip, car ride, plane, lunch break, ect I'm on. Heck if on a plane or something I can always just plug it in like I would have to with my phone/tablet from excessive use.
