I was actually quite surprised by this. By the sounds of it, Nintendo isn't going to put enough effort into online even with paid online, so either the price needs to be very cheap or there has to be a huge effort Nintendo has simply miscommunicated to us. Considering the overall pricing, I'm not sure the price is going to be low, and I don't think Nintendo could have miscommunicated everything this badly either. Long story short, it seems Nintendo is going to have a paid online service that doesn't offer nearly enough buck for the money, which is surprising to me. Of course if it works, it'll be great for Nintendo, but there's been criticism even about better services, so...

Why wouldn't Nintendo charge for online? They want money like everyone else.
Nintendo also said paying $60 for games was never gonna happen during the PS360 era, did it with the Wii U.
Nintendo didn't have DLCs on the PS360 era, had on the Wii U.

Nintendo is just a generation behind everyone else, but they'll obviously as a company push anything that is accepted by the market.
Nintendo is greed like any company, and even if they don't have much to offer back for doing so, they don't care, they will adopt it.

Money is the word.

Because it has a good chance of failing if the pricing is high. It has potential for huge profit, but at the same time it's also a huge risk.

I know Nintendo is greedy, just like everyone else. I know it from the prices that never seem to come down, be it consoles, games, or accessories. Even used stuff tends to cost a lot.
