It's just a matter of math. By the end of March 2016, there was a normal amount of PS4s on store shelves. The same will hold true by the end of March 2017. So if Sony forecasts shipments of 20m units, they also need to sell through 20m units, because retailers aren't going to increase the stock they have sitting on their store shelves. The PS4 sold through 17.5m this calendar year, I guess 2-3m of that number were sold from January to March 2016. So for the currently running fiscal year, Sony has sold through 14.5-15.5m of their 20m goal. That leaves 4.5-5.5m for the January to March quarter which could only be attained by doubling the number of the previous year. That's unrealistic because the current momentum matches up closely with the one from one year ago, therefore at this point of the fiscal year the PS4 would have needed to be at least 1.5m higher than it actually is. |
Yeah, some people make the mistake of adding on extra consoles to get shipped figures. You only do this for initial shipment or if stock status changes.
Sony is going to miss it's PS4 forecast by a few million.
