Feels like a lot of straw man, to me. There's plenty of variety in Western melee: over the top God of War, rhythmic Arkham/Mordor, realistic boxing/mma, grounded period fare like Mount & Blade, etc. Comparing the combat in what are primarily rpg's to games that are basically hack n slash with a few numbers dashed on top seems pretty silly, to say nothing of calling them samey when the whole musou genre exists. I'll grant that a lot of the tightest melee combat calls Japan home, but let's not equate speed and flash to quality.

Why are you comparing a hack n' slash action RPG game to story driven traditional WRPGs? You might as well say that playing Witcher 3 makes you feel sad for the sad state of story and character development in Japanese action RPGs.

These comments were overlooked, I suppose because they didn't offer enough of a handle for one side or another to dig into as idealized opponent.

The best of western developers in this genre when it comes to GAMEPLAY SPECIFICALLY, are pretty much average when it comes to Japanese games. Sony Santa Monica with God of War, EA with Dante's Inferno, and Ninja Theory with Heavenly Sword, DmC, and Enslaved (I know they're European) are the only standouts I can think of.

Phew, I thought Europe wasn't Western for a second there.  Seriously, WTF?  Back to basics, man...
