I would say at this point religion is more of a negative for humanity than a positive. I don't really see it being much of a positive right now.
Yes Stalin and Hitler killed lots of power but that highlights another type evil, which is hyper nationalism. That is basically in effect very similar to religious like fanaticism, it just happens that the "god" in that scenario is the state. It's basically just another form of religion.
