This is a very interesting and recurring perspective to me. The idea that there are games that are suited for portable and game that are suited for home consoles. The games I'm by far the most excited about playing away from my TV are the AAA ones.
I always tell this story, but I loved playing Snake Eater 3D because I would play it at home and than play it at work on my lunch breaks. I even played once while in the waiting room for a check-up. I played it with the Circle Pad Pro, so I had the full console button layout. Then I got Phantom Pain, and it was extremely frustrating that I couldn't do the same. It felt like my play sessions were always cut short, so I would spend hours at work thinking about MGSV and wanting to get back home and play again. With Snake Eater 3D, I never felt this way.
I think that a lot of people have never played and beaten a "console quality" game in a portable form factor before, so they don't understand how compelling that convenience can be. They associate portible gaming with short, bite-sized, small-scale experiences, which isn't what they are anymore. That being said, I'm also not self-consious about gaming, so that might have something to do with it as well. I don't get embarassed playing games in public.
