I think people are confusing this with Micro USB.
USB-C is a *different format*, your cell phone Micro USB cables will not work with this.
USB-C has many other advantages, but odds are not many people have these cables in their homes yet.
There's no way the 3DS could've used this, this format didn't exist back then, it's relatively new for electronics as is, most phones/laptops/tablets don't support it yet.
