Mario Sunshine was kind of flat as far as 3D Mario games though. It majorly missed the sort of magic that 64 and the Galaxies had. A lot of that had to do with the weird water canon thing, worse controls, and shallow level design. But, like Super Mario 3D World, it is more of a spinoff than a core Mario title. One of the first things that Nintendo said about it was that this isn't the sequel to Mario 64, that is a separate game. The separate game ended up materializing as Super Mario Galaxy.
