The concept of the president leaving his private entreprises and taking a salary for the four year public office he will hold is an important tradition since the idea is that he will not be influenced by private interests. It´s reasonable that people object to him not following this tradition and I would hope people critisized JFK aswell for not accepting that payment. It´s mostly symbolic but many things you do as president are symbolic and still important.
