First, instead of dividing the software output in two, it's just all in one system, that alone is a major difference. Nintendo also avoids redundancy in their developement cycles (no more two mario karts, smash, 2D and 3D mario...) and that can help them working on other games. All their engines and assets will work on the switch, no need to adaptem to massive different hardware. And 3rd parties don't have to choose between handheld and home console anymore when making ames for them. Those are major differences, and they more than compensate the need for more complex games.
Also, it was alred time to make an HD engine for MH. It's been long overdue.
