There is a difference with what is popular though. Your bringing nostalgia into this, worldwide people kno more about blastoise/venasaur/meowth/ and many other gen 1 and some gen2 pokemon. But within the community (at least pokemon or people up to date with the franchise) greninja is the only one in past couple of gens (with lucario being a second) that doesnt need to be as popular as charizard/pikachu/mewtwo because of gen 1.
Point is Greninja is as popular as the others now. Its even in SSB which itself puts it ahead of the competition
