Some guy was claiming the development costs for Neo-mode would be in the millions, tens of millions and this shit went on and on. In the end Sony did exactly what they needed to and what was common sense right from the start, Pro-mode is much less work than a standard port between platforms. |
Yup, that was my first thought when I saw this thread, and honestly I'm surprised that topic hasn't been brought up since Pro launch.
It really was crazy the amount of shit talk, and look we are here and it isn't 10% of the work some made it out to be.
This website really needs to integrate a betting functionality.

All ps4 games work on ps4 pro and publishers/devs don't get any extra money on putting in any extra effort. But my question is, if devs are already not wanting to put in some extra effort to improve games for the ps4pro, how are they going to do it for the scorpio? Or has MS found the perfect number for running any xbox one game at xbox setting at 4k. |
Firstly, focusing only on older/existing games, it is not just "free updates",
it is whether they are attractive to buy for a Pro user who hasn't yet purchased them on OG PS4.
In this case, they only need to sell Pro users a trivial percentage (of OG version sales) to achieve same payback.
Is it really that dubious that Pro install base will not reach EDIT: 0.3% of OG PS4, even let's say in the next year or so?
And really, this is alot less work compared to "remastered" versions from older platforms which differ alot architecturally.
And certainly for larger devs, choosing to optimize an existing/older game for Pro is actually a nice excercise,
in that such experience will be useful on their future games, all for a very small dev effort which makes it doable to schedule the work.
It isn't necessarily "lost" effort, it speeds up and improves what they accomplish on their next game.
re: new games, Sony is making Pro support a requirement to access the larger OG PS4 base... which sells at 2-3:1 of Xbone.
So it's WELL worth it. Really, it'd be well worth it even if the Pro dev demands were much higher. But they aren't.
And the visual experience of their Pro version WILL most likely be what they use to promote their games,
which will carry over even to the "OG" PS4 version, even if it doesn't deliver to the same performance level.
The question of Scorpio is interesting, because MS can't (as much) leverage the attraction of a larger base of previous gen.
On top of the fact that Scorpio will be more of a change in architecture, so not quite as simple as tweaking some settings etc.
Although to be clear, Scorpio WILL be closer in architecture to PS4 itself, which obviously does have larger install base.
But over all, the Scorpio looks set to be like a regular new-gen launch. PS4 Pro is a minimal-change "update" of PS4.
While MS looks set to "update" Scorpio with Scorpio "Pro"... While Sony will be launching a PS5.
So they will be playing hopscotch in terms of "update vs new gen", which is curious, but not exactly shocking.
