They don't want the hardware that their entire future as a console manufacturer likely hinges upon to "overshadow" a nostalgic anecdote made for basically one holiday run and some quick cash in the waiting stages and a handheld that it barely managing half of its predecessors sales even without proper competition and a killer line-up of software? People are screaming for more info, withholding it at this point is ridiculous and won't win them neither points nor more customers. They are either still utterly oblivious to how the modern market works, and by extension, its consumers, or they're withholding info because the final decisions simply haven't been made yet. That's what I'm thinking anyway, I'm hoping it's the latter.
The need to put what appear to be bad decisions in a bad light is justified and then some, the plan as it stands seems full of holes. Are people not allowed to be skeptical of this concept? They're making a huge gamble and it could go wrong. A big number of Nintendo fans will say that it'll be fine, and they may be right, but you can't just brush of any and all criticism as hogwash on a whim, there are legitimate concerns revolving around the NS and most major online publications and their readers are all over them (in addition to some positive buzz, of course).
I at least partially agree with the OP, the NS seems (at least at the moment) to be offering the worst of two markets and trying to appeal to two or more widely different demographics (they obviously want the casuals back and they want to regain and retain the favour of the more core gamers as well), this was in no small part what brought the Wii U to its knees from the beginning. Between phones, tablets, computers and actual dedicated home consoles, this might land in an awkward middle territory that could very well lack merit. Time will tell, as will more info, but for now there are a lot of points to be made as to why the NS won't be a runaway success, in both the short and long run.
Still waiting for more info, I plan on making my own thread with some thoughts and theories, seeing as how I managed to mark the 8th gen down almost to the inch so far and made some early and good calls, it'll be fun at any rate as something to come back to, regardless of whether it comes true or not. Oh, and I'm eagerly awaiting Johnlucas' return with the inevitable 240 million lifetime sales and enormously intellectual reasoning behind the numbers.
