How much Nintendo paid them? There is nothing exciting about Switch compared to Wii U. All of them can easily make their games for Wii U right now:
Portable aspect? Off-TV play on Wii U.
Detachable Joy-Cons? Wiimotes.
Mario Kart 8 and Splatoon? Just upgrades existing Wii U versions.
Skyrim? It easily can run on Wii U too.
Wii U also have advantages with additional touch-controller. Switch have, well.. puppy-head? Nothing, but cute.

The WiiU was a flawed concept. Aplying the DS doublescreen on a home console took a lot of power  that would have been useful in other areas, and its bad advertisement crippled people's attention for it. The Swich, while it has yet to prove itself, it looks like a much solid proposition from the beginning. The concept is easy to grasp, the tech seems to work well, and any other "gimmick" has been left aside (no double screen, no motion controlls, no 3D), the thing does what it says in the title. Nintendo is playing to their strenghts here, and Nintendo handhelds are always successful. Even big companies can't ignore an userbase of 50-60m if the porting work needed is not as big as it was before.

I agree that some companies are more excited than others, with Bethesda and T2's answers being jst great in how corporate and by the book they are. But that is always the case.

You know it deserves the GOTY.
