As Iwata reference family of devices the expression don't put all your eggs in one basket comes to mind, not only can they focus on making each platform as good as they can to their strengths one platform having any difficulty wouldn't impact the other as much even though they'd share the same ecosystem and library.
By making the ecosystem the platform much like IOS instead of merging the hardware into one separate dedicated devices can be built to the best of their strengths and aims rather than having the goals and restrictions of HH and HC conflict.
