The problem is outside of a small group of Nintendo loyalists like myself and you, probably not a lot of people would buy such a system.

It'd be the GameCube all over again, but worse because Sony and MS both have 3+ year head starts, and today Sony/MS also lock people into to their online ecosystems, which is more of a factor than it was in 2001 (ie: even if you prefer say an XBox, you buy the PS4 because your best friend already has it and you want to be able to play COD, NBA2K, Destiny, GTA, etc. online with them).

Nintendo needed to release the system you've described 2-3 years ago, by 2017 it's way too late.

If they want to release a "serious" console now, it has to be Scorpio level in spec at minimum, I would say probably even beyond that to really get any mainstream attention.

2.5 TFLOP isn't going to impress anyone when the PS4 Pro is already 4 TFLOPS and Scorpio is at 6 TFLOP and while the regular PS4 has thousands of games already. The only system it would maybe compare favorably against would maybe be the vanilla XBox One S.

That is why it has to have a lower price point. $199 and people would love the thing. 2.5 isn't much compared to Scorpio, but it is ahead of PS4 and Xbox One. Then all Nintendo needs to do is ride out the generation with their unified teams, sell on mobile, make some theme park rides and make some more Nintendo merch, and they will have carved out a real solid niche for themselves that doesn't solely rely on video games, but still features it prominently. You can't tell me that a Pokemon with 2.5 TFs of power wouldn't look like the cartoon but in real time. That alone would move units. People will buy a console and Pokemon for $249, but they won't spend $299 for a 720p tablet, no matter who makes it.

As soundwave said that isn't how things work out. No one actually cares about specs, they care about games and NX games will look near identical to PS4 games unless they got a decent CPU to double the FPS which would likely negate their price advantage over the PS4. The average gamer is not interested in secondary consoles which are similar to consoles they already own. Thats why there's typically a draw/win/loose situation. PS3 and Xbox 360 drew last gen. PS4 is winning this gen and eating X1's potential market leaving it stalling in WW sales. This is why a $99 Gamecube with all of its Nintendo exclusives sold 22m next to the PS2's 150m, most people were happily content with their Playstation despite all the exclusives Nintendo had to offer (playstation has its own of course). A traditional Nintendo console would have to compete for space against the PS4/X1 and they've been out for 3 years now, why anyone would go for the unestablished platform with 1/20th of the games is beyond me. They'd either be a hardcore gamer who is happy to own multiple consoles or a core Nintendo fan (essentially somewhere between Wii and Gamecube's audience)

If the NX tablet is $299, its screen won't be 720p. I mean if we're using that Emily rumour of 720p we also ought to acknowledge the bit where she says its also going to be cheaper then many people think. Anyway I think the importance of resolution is being widely overstated imo. Before the Wii it was ridiculous to think a new console could come out and barely outpace its 5 year old predecessor. Consumers are intelligent enough to gauge function and see what does and doesn't appeal to them in a device, they don't look at the smallprint on the back and tick of a bunch of boxes. Something may be the norm in a market, that doesn't make it a necessity to exist in the market in light of actual USPs. If you've ever used a 720p 6" screen you know its looks absolutely fine, so the dramatics over it are not warranted imo. If anyone has interest in the NX tablet they obviously value its gaming credentials and that shouldn't be confused with any other gaming tablets out there which play a random selection of games (mostly years old) and have no branding, marketing or killer exclusives supporting them (Pokemon, Mario, Zelda, Yokai Watch, Monster Huntert to name a few). If you say people will buy a $250 console with Pokemon on it, then Nintendo are on to a winner as the NX is looking to be exactly that and more.
