There are a handful of people in this world who's opinions matter to me. If one of those people says something derogatory about me then I feel offended. Then I internalise it and look for ways to change, because I trust those people and value their opinions.
For example being a father is the most important thing in the world to me, so if someone who's opinion I valued (my wife) was to tell me that I was being a bad father, I would feel deeply offended, even angry, because I know I do my best with the knowledge I have and it's just that important to me. But I would walk away and think about whether I need to change. Because if it's so important that it gets you angry, then it's also worth reflecting on and changing for.
