I think that applies to every male harem protagonist ever. Actually, I can think of a fair few examples of non-harem characters that would apply to as well. So many useless guys in anime

Sure, sure! But not every male character has the opportunity to have a huge/diverse and official harem AND to become the ruler of the universe by doing that :D
