I don't think VR is going to happen. 720p is too low of a display resolution and Miyamoto shit on VR again by saying no to Mario on VR:

I think the "gimmick" outside of the hybrid portable nature of the system will be the detachable side controllers. Nintendo and 3rd parties will be able to make all sorts of different controllers that can change the controls for different games.
It's very toy-like and very much in Nintendo's vein.
