If their next portable fails it's likely curtains for them as a hardware maker anyway, so doubling down on the portable and giving the portable all the games instead of keeping the bigger games segragated on the console is probably Nintendo's best bet at this point. Though they are in this position because a series of bad decisions over the course of the last 20 years. 

The thing that kinda makes me go "hmmm" is there's nothing here that really sounds like anything new. It's basically a portable Wii U from the sounds of it.

I guess the real question will be what will be considered a failure? By combining their handheld and console markets, you're looking at 70m units. But how many of that is double dipping? And what happens to software sales when you figure the double dipping is only done once with NX? I really am not sure that the hybrid is the right way to go.
