Which Nvidia Shield are you talking about? The portable or the console? The portable doesn't use a Tegra X1, it uses the older Tegra K1.

You can't just arbitrarily make the screen size smaller like that either, the reason why it's an 8-inch tablet is because it needs that room inside to keep the chip cool. You also need phyiscal controls on the sides which will take up space, so you can't make it smaller in that way either.

That 8-inch Tegra tablet would not fit inside your pocket unless you're wearing MC Hammer pants.

Damn right you get back in here! You only responded to half of my post though...

Huh I thought it was same chip, but nope you're right, my bads. Still, you can't tell me the X1 can't at all work inside 3DS dimensions but will suddenly work perfectly inside the same dimensions just with 2 inches of extra width as this rumor says.

It can ... maybe by 2018 or so when 7nm production of chips is more common place.

Right now it can't. This is why Nvidia has been unsuccessful in getting the Tegra X1 chips into any smartphones .... they simply cannot work in a form factor that small.

They'll be able to do a NX shrink by 2018 most likely, but until then if they are using the Tegra X1/X2 tier chip ... it has to be a tablet size device. No ifs, ands, or buts about it.

Personally I don't really see the appeal in having graphics that good (Wii U quality or better) but limiting them to a tiny 5-inch display anyway. You're going to want some screen real estate to play games like Zelda: BotW, even 6.2-inch as a screen is probably a bit small. Wouldn't surprise me if Nintendo also offers an NX XL which is even bigger in the future as well (8-9 inch screen).

This still a ways off from a 3DS XL:

That's not going into anyone's jeans.
